Gentry's Boutique

Gentry's room was a labor of love! I had such fun coming up with ideas for this room, but actually getting them to execution stage is another story. But, I do love how this room turned out!

I am probably the world's worst photographer, so please excuse the quality of these photos.

I knew I really wanted a black and white awning in the room, and started from there. The closet in the room has double doors. So, I had the idea to change out the doors to glass front doors and make it look like a boutique storefront. I had FastSigns make a vinyl decal for each door that said, Gentry's Boutique. I special ordered the glass doors from Home Depot, and purchased the door handles at Hobby Lobby.

My dad built the awning frames, and with the help of my husband and his aunt, I sewed the awnings. Not too shabby for a sewing novice!

I knew I really wanted an old dresser for the room to use as a changing table, but it also needed to be large enough to store diapers and clothes. I searched and searched and searched Craig's List, but no such luck on finding the perfect dresser. Then when I had all but given up, I was in one of my favorite stores, The Dove's Nest, and met a lady who refinished furniture. She happened to have a few pieces sitting in her garage, and one of them was this piece. I added the knobs from Hobby Lobby. A cute little chandelier night light.

The print below was a sign at my baby shower. I love what it said, so I knew it had to be in her room somewhere. I put it in an ornate frame from Hobby Lobby.
I saw this frame below at several online stores for $100+. I decided to make my own. The picture inside is one of her newborn pics. I made the fancy hat she is wearing in the pic.The window seat is across the room from the closet, so I decided to mirror the awning and use it as a window treatment.

We got her bedding and crib from Dimples and Dandelions. I already had the old iron trellis and decided to keep it behind the bed. I love that the bedding looks like a skirt!

I already had the hanging frames below. I painted the frames and pole black, changed the ribbon out to pink ribbon, and filled the frames with pictures of Gentry's family.

I had my dad add an outdoor light to the area next to the door. It was a small wall that had nothing on it, and I thought it would be nice to have a small "night light" of some sort. My dad wired it in so it is controlled by a light switch.

I ordered the bucket from Etsy and added the feather boa to use as a trash can.

A sweet friend gave me this cutout for my shower gift. It is covered in glitter, and is the perfect addition to her door.

I used the frame from Rhett's old mobile to make this one for Gentry. I couldn't find a mobile that I loved, so I wasn't going to use one. I found these dress form hooks at Hobby Lobby, as well as the center pink crown. Jeremy bent the hooks backwards, and they hooked in the holes of the mobile perfectly!

I had several accessories already in this room, so I just reused them. These stacked suitcases now hold pacifiers and bows.

Rocker

These hats belonged to my great grandmother. What a special item to pass down to Gentry. (I made the hat in the center for her newborn pictures).

The chandelier was already in the room and matched the theme perfectly, so it just stayed put.

Big Boy Bed

We are in the process of turning Rhett's room into a big boy room. It's not quite finished yet, but I'm happy to say it's close!

I had big plans for his new room when the time was right to change it. But, he wasn't quite ready for a new room. He decided that he liked the nautical theme. No biggie, and much cheaper and easier on our wallet and backs. So, boats will stay... at least for a while longer. I will post complete pics of the room once everything is done, but for now, here are some pics of the big boy bed!

My dad found the bed at a garage sale for $2o! It looked just like some that Pottery Barn Kids carries, but needed a little work.

So, Jeremy (and Rhett and I) got to work sanding, priming, painting, and repairing. I've never really "painted" furniture before. (At least not the proper way-- if spray painting doesn't count). This was a painstaking process to say the least. I don't think Jeremy or I will be painting anything else anytime soon.
My house has been turned upside down for the last month or two. It sometimes looked like a war zone. I'm thankful to have some peace and harmony back to our home!
The weather wasn't so cooperative, so much of the painting was done inside. This is mid-process. Still needing more coats.

But, Rhett LOVES his new bed. He keeps telling me, "thanks for decorating it!". Sweet boy!
Makes it all worth it!

SUYL- Bathrooms

Today at Kelly's Korner, it's Show Us Your Life- Bathrooms. Here are some pictures of our master bathroom. Nothing too fancy. I would like to add molding in here and maybe some type of paneling. We'll see if our house sells first, though. I don't have any pics of Rhett's bathroom and it is VERY hard to photograph. You can see some pics from when I re-did it, here, but I am already planning another re-do soon!

SUYL- Kitchens

It's Show Us Your Life again over at Kelly's Korner and this week's topic is kitchens. So, welcome to my kitchen, litterally in the center of our home! Once again, these pics are from our real estate listing.

This is a pic as you are walking in from the main hallway:
I am tired of the red walls, but haven't figured out what color I'd like to paint it. I'd really like to paint the island black, but my husband is TOTALLY against it. Our countertops are boring white corian. Apparently that is a bad thing when you're trying to sell your home. I'd love to have granite, but really, corian is still an upgrade, and there is nothing wrong with the countertops, so I don't see us changing that any time soon. I don't really care too much for our white appliances, but they work, and that is a good thing, so they're staying put for now:) Boy, that sure was a whole lot of complaining, huh?;)

The quote above the kitchen window seat was hand painted by my talented mom. It says, "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first". I got the light fixture from here; it has a pear in the center. I still really like that light fixture, though I'd like to change out the shades. The table is really small for our family now, but I have a sentimental attachment to it, so I cannot get rid of it. My grandfather bought it for me when I moved into my first apartment, so it is something that I would like to keep. I think if we ever sell this house, I would like to use it as a desk in another room. But, until then, it will continue to work here. The hutch was a college graduation gift from my parents and I love it, still. Again, sentimental attachment.

I painted the words over the archway to the family room after seeing this talented woman's kitchen.
The old train station clock is a reproduction that I got at Ballard Designs. I've had it for years and still love it! The sign on the back of the island says, "Brittany's Kitchen, est. 2002" (the year we were married).
Those canisters are hard to see, but they are MacKenzie Childs. I love them and have the matching candy jar sitting over on the bar. I love black and white and am really trying to incorporate it into my home more.
Here is a shot looking in from the family room. We changed out our white, chipped, stained, dirty sink last year to a stainless one with a farmhouse-style faucet. We also added an instant hot water dispenser which gets used SO MUCH! LOVE it! Hard to see in this pic, but in the corner by the fridge is a Kitchen Aide Mixer which I couldn't live without. I think it's one of the best Christmas gifts I've ever received!

One more shot looking in from the family room. We added the corbels under our bar a few years ago. I love the look of them!

SUYL- Dining Rooms

This is our dining room. It is connected to our formal living area, and nothing too fancy about it. The china cabinet is mostly filled with crystal from our wedding and my grandmother's tea service. Once again, these pics are from our real estate listing.

SUYL- Master Bedrooms

I am once again participating in Show Us Your Life over at Kelly's Korner. This week's topic is Master Bedrooms. I also had these professional pictures from the real estate listing on our home, so I thought I would participate again this week.

So, this is our master as you are walking in from the door:

I would say our bedroom is long and skinny. The color on the walls is called Hint of Gold (can't remember who the manufacturer was though). The furniture was a wedding present from my husband! I still love it. I know that most people sleep in a king sized bed, but this bed has sentimental value to me, so I am fine with a queen. The GIANT clock on the wall is one of my favorite pieces in the house! It was a gift from my mom last Christmas and I just love it! It was the perfect accessory to that space. No, it doesn't work-- the hands are not movable-- so it is always 10:20 in our bedroom. My husband sometimes jokes about that! The 2 chairs in front of our bed were purchased at a 2nd hand store in a little town near the Oklahoma border. They were $35 for the pair, so I couldn't pass them up. I had them covered in a coordinating fabric to match our room.

And walking in from the master bathroom:
Our master looks out into our back yard, just beyond that bay window. Those two skinny iron door things on either side of our dresser are from Pottery Barn. They, too, were a Christmas gift a few years back. They are not my favorite pieces, but I have had many, many things hanging on either side of the dresser, and these look the best, so I guess they'll stay a little while longer. My mom gave me the wall word above the dresser one year for Christmas. It took me forever and a day to hang it, but I finally did and I think it works. There is an armoire just to the left of this picture, but the photographer didn't photograph it. We got it for FREE and it matches the rest of the furniture pretty well, but not exactly. I am usually not a fan of putting furniture in front of windows, but since this room is so long and skinny, there was no other way to arrange our furniture when we got the armoire (which we really needed). It works pretty well in here and doesn't bother me too much.

Show us your life- living rooms

It's Show Us Your Life over at Kelly's Korner today and this week's topic is living rooms. I normally do not participate in these, but since our house is currently on the market, I already had these professional pics of my home saved from the real estate listing. So, I thought I'd participate and likely will in the coming weeks as long as I have pics of the topic.

Getting Organized!

I recently won an AWESOME giveaway from Sarah at Life {Sweet} Life! She seems to be an organizing queen, and had extra organizing labels left over that she was giving away to one lucky reader. I am always in the need to get organized, so I entered and WON!!! These were not any ordinary labels, they were 1" copper colored labels from Wonderful Graffiti! And, I received a TON of them! I was so excited, you all really have NO IDEA (unless you are my family or close friends reading this) how unorganized I am! So, this giveaway prize was a blessing because it made me make some much needed organizing improvements to my home! I am so thankful I won Sarah! Thanks again!
I really have to work on my photography skills- hard to see these behind the clothes bar, but they say: Detergent, Bleach and Fabric Softener.

I got to work immediately upon receiving the package in the mail. The words were taller than my shelves, so I got creative and labeled the shelf itself, not just the side profile (if that makes sense). Some of the labels were not something that I could use for one reason or another, so I cut them up and made my own, as seen below. (All were made from cutting up other words). It worked perfectly:Except my "x" above-- that one was a little tricky and it certainly shows.

But no matter-- I am ORGANIZED! And I LOVE IT! I even checked out Wonderful Graffiti's website and am considering ordering more!!
